Eugne Atget photographed Paris from 1888 until his death in 1927, producing thousands of photographs of the city, from its great public buildings, churches, residences, restaurants, and stores to its gardens and parks and its people and their trades. Between 1997 and 1998, Christopher Rauschenberg, son of artist Robert Rauschenberg, rephotographed five hundred of the outdoor scenes that Atget documented, identifying and preserving the vision of premodern Paris that Atget had established a century earlier. In his rephotography project Rauschenberg has chosen not to replicate Atgets equipment, stance, or time of day. Rather, his images are a reference to the distinctive mood and characteristics of the earlier photographs. The result is a luscious documentation of the city as it was a hundred years ago and the changes that it has undergone since. With essays by Clark Worswick, Alison Nordstrom, and Rosamond Bernier.
