근대 역사의 소용돌이 속에서도

묵묵히 서울을 지켜 온 한국의 건축물





서울은 역사가 오래된 도시이다. 조선의 수도 이후에만 600년 이상 되었으며 삼국시대부터 서울 일대는 삼국 사이에 치열한 쟁탈의 대상이었다. 역사는 건축물을 남기게 마련이다. 서울도 삼국시대의 흔적부터 시작해서 조선과 20세기 현대 역사 등을 고스란히 건축물로 간직하고 있다. 물론 많은 전쟁과 근대화 과정에서 소실되기도 하고, 우리 손으로 직접 없애기도 했으나 잘 찾아보면 건축물을 통해 서울 역사의 기록을 추적하는 일이 가능하다. 한국전쟁 이후 현대사에 대한 건축적 기록은 상대적으로 활발한 편이어서 역동적 한국 현대사에 걸맞은 다양한 작품들이 곳곳에 그 역사를 증명하며 서 있다.

한국문화예술위원회 한국현대예술시리즈 중 네 번째 『City as Arts: 100 Notable Works of Architecture in Seoul』 는 지금의 세계적인 도시 "서울"을 있게 한 대표적인 건축-조형물을 소개한다. 한 도시의 수준과 품격은 그 도시의 역사를 증명하는 건축물이 얼마나 잘 보존되어 있고, 또 이 시대 사람들이 그것을 얼마나 일상 생활에서 활용하고 즐기느냐에 달려있다.

이 책은 우리의 건축-조형물에 대한 관심과 애정을 고취할 수 있도록 서울 건축물의 역사적 의미, 작품성, 공공성 등의 기준에 따라 100작품을 엄선하여 수록하였다. 또한, 15세기부터 현재에 이르기까지 시대적으로 Traditional Architecture: 15th-Late 19th Century, Early Modern and Colonial Architecture: Late 19th Century-1945, Modern Architecture (1950s-1980s)Ⅰ, Modern Architecture (1950s-1980s) Ⅱ, Contemporary Architecture: 1990-Present, Architecture by International Masters 등 6개의 챕터로 분류하여 건축에 스며있는 한국의 역사를 음미해보며 현재 서울을 구성하고 있는 건축물의 역사성과 미학을 더듬어볼 수 있도록 하였다.



Ⅰ. 전통 건축: 15세기-19세기 후반

600년을 이어온 조선의 건축은 자연과의 조화를 중시하는 우리 선조의 이념을 바탕으로 지혜가 깃든 기술로 완성되었다.



Ⅱ. 근대 초기 및 일제 식민 시대 건축: 19세기 후반-1945

이 시대 서울의 건축은 근대 도심형 한옥을 시작으로 서양의 건축 문화가 전통적 건축문화에 녹아든 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다.



Ⅲ. 근대 건축 (1950년대-1980년대)Ⅰ

서구의 건축 양식과 디자인 기법을 도입했지만 한국의 건축은 여전히 서구의 기술에 한국 고유의 정신과 건축양식을 접목하는 방법을 고민했다.



Ⅳ. 근대 건축 (1950년대-1980년대) Ⅱ

이 시기 서울의 고층 빌딩들은 한국의 급격한 경제성장에 힘입어 현대 첨단 기술의 집약체로 기획되었으며, 근대의 실용성과 심미성을 대표하며 현대 건축 문화에 긍정적 영향을 주게 된다.



Ⅴ. 현대 건축: 1990-현재

산업화와 함께 획일화되고 정형화되어 대량 생산되었던 건축이 현대에 들어서는 다시 자연과 환경 친화적이며 인간 중심의 건축양식 및 기법으로 돌아가고 있다.



Ⅵ. 거장들의 건축

이 시대를 대표하는 세계적인 거장들이 2000년대 이후 서울을 무대로 다양한 시도와 작품활동을 펼치고, 그 결과로 오늘의 서울은 한층 더 세계적인 도시로 발돋움하게 된다.







Architecture Meets Art in a City of Seoul



The city of Seoul boasts a long history as a prized territory on the peninsula since the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE-AD 688) and as the national capital for over 600 years of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). History is bound to leave behind architecture, and Seoul is home to myriad buildings, from those constructed in ancient times to 21st century skyscrapers. Many of them have disappeared in the course of wars and modernization, but the architecture still remains to be a perfect media to start tracing back the history of this city. When it comes to more recent buildings, there have been increased efforts in archiving and preserving post-Korean War architecture, and many remain today, witnessing the dynamic changes that the nation has gone through in modern times.

City as Arts: 100 Notable Works of Architecture in Seoul aims at introducing the most notable among Seouls architecture to visitors and readers from around the world. A citys dignity and stature rely on the preservation of its architecture, which speaks for its history, and also on how effectively its citizens of today can utilize and enjoy them in their everyday lives. One hundred buildings have been selected, based on their significance as historical relic, as work of art and as public facility. Those are also categorized chronologically into six chapters: Traditional Architecture: 15th-Late 19th Century, Early Modern and Colonial Architecture: Late 19th Century-1945, Modern Architecture (1950s-1980s)Ⅰ, Modern Architecture (1950s-1980s) Ⅱ, Contemporary Architecture: 1990-Present, Architecture by International Masters.
